History of leather production
For over 75 years, we at Dose have been a leading supplier of machines and systems for the leather industry.
Based in Bühl, Germany, our company specializes in the development and manufacture of high-quality stainless steel machines that revolutionize leather production.
With our many years of experience and commitment to quality, we provide customized solutions for tanneries worldwide.
Origin and development
The art of leather production goes back thousands of years and has constantly evolved over time.
Originally, animal hides were worked with simple tools and preserved through natural processes.
With the industrial revolution came significant technological advances that made leather production more efficient and consistent.
Today, the modern tannery combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology to produce leather of the highest quality.
Tradition vs. modernity
While traditional leather production techniques are based on natural tanning agents and manual processing, modern methods rely on precise machines and chemical processes.
Traditional methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive, but offer unique and characterful leather products.
Modern methods, on the other hand, enable faster production with consistently high quality and sustainability.
The leather production process
Preparation phase I
The first step in leather production is the removal of hair and impurities from the hides.
This process, known as dehairing and cleaning, ensures that the hides are clean and ready for further processing.
Modern machines and chemical solutions help to carry out this step efficiently and thoroughly.
Tanning
Tanning is the core process of leather production in which animal hides are transformed into durable leather.
There are various tanning methods, including vegetable tanning, synthetic tanning and mineral tanning.
- Vegetable tanning uses natural tanning agents from different parts of plants, such as tannins from tree bark (e.g. oak or spruce), leaves (e.g. olive) or roots (e.g. rhubarb).
- Synthetic tanning uses chemical tanning agents that create specific properties in the leather.
- Mineral tanning, especially chrome tanning, is known for its efficiency and the production of soft, durable leather.
Specific machines for tanning
Our machines, such as the Dosemat VG and Dosemat VGI laboratory and test drum, offer advanced solutions for laboratory and production scale tanning.
These machines enable precise control and reproducibility of results, which is crucial for the development and production of high quality leather.
Our Dosemat models SM and DM as well as SD and DD work on a larger or even very large scale.
Retanning and dyeing
Tanning is followed by retanning and dyeing to give the leather additional properties and color tones.
These processes improve the softness, strength and appearance of the leather.
Use of machines
The Dose PFI parallel dyeing device is an excellent example of our innovative solutions.
It enables precise comparative tests on a laboratory scale and is scalable for production.
The Dosemat of every size – single or double, with a single or three-part interior – has been providing the best service in finishing and dyeing for decades.
Drying and finishing
After dyeing, the leather is dried and finished.
This step includes fulling, smoothing and applying protective layers to give the leather its final texture and durability.
Example machines
The Dose Mill barrel is specially developed for dry milling.
It provides a controlled environment for finishing the leather and ensures consistent quality without grain damage.
Technology and innovation
Automation and control
Our automation systems such as iPControl and WebControl offer comprehensive control and monitoring options for the entire leather production process.
These systems ensure precise control, increased efficiency and improved product quality.
Advantages of automated control
- Simple operation and customization
- Reliable hardware and software
- Reduced error rate and fast problem solving
- Real-time monitoring and data analysis
- Remote access to all process parameters
Water and chemical dosing
Our Dosemix system sets standards in terms of speed, precision and ease of use.
It mixes hot and cold water to the desired temperature and doses the right amount to the intended consumer.
This ensures consistent results in leather production.
The Chemdos system enables precise and fully automatic dosing of liquid and powder chemicals.
This is crucial for the production of leather with consistently high quality.
